Your Life Isn’t Valuable in Jurassic World, but Animal Clones Must be Saved

Chris Pratt holds back a raptor in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.

Dinosaurs abound in the latest installment of the Jurassic franchise – Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom and it’s our job to save them from an erupting volcano, even if that means risking human lives.

Does God Value Human Lives Over Animal Lives?

In our culture the value of human life has been kicked to the gutter. In 2017 the CDC reported 881,000 abortions across the United States and in 2018 Hawaii became the 7th state to legalize physician-assisted suicide.

American culture has come to view human life as a disposable resource instead of a sacred gift from God. The Lord placed special value on human life that is actually superior to animals.

Matthew 12:12 (NIV)

How much more valuable is a person than a sheep!

Luke 12:24 (NIV)

Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet God feeds them. And how much more valuable you are than birds!

Why Does Human Life Have Special Value?

People are made in the image of the Triune God; that gives humans inherent value.

Genesis 1:27 (NIV)

So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.

We Have Been Asked to Steward

God created the world, then us, and asked us to take care of it. The verse right in front of Genesis 1:27 speaks to the role man serves to animals.

Genesis 1:26 (NIV)

Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”

There is a clear call given to mankind to responsibly take care of God’s creation, which includes animals (and dinosaurs). Does this mean that we are to lay down our lives in order to protect animal life as Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom depicts?

God Assign’s Roles to Animals

In the Old Testament we see that God allowed animal sacrifice to foreshadow the atonement Jesus would provide on the cross. Animals died in the place of guilty people, not the other way around.

Hebrews 13:11 (NIV)

The high priest carries the blood of animals into the Most Holy Place as a sin offering

Yum Yum, Thanks for the Grub

God also allows animals to be eaten. After the flood the Lord expanded the menu for Noah and his descendants.

Genesis 9:3 (NIV)

Everything that lives and moves about will be food for you. Just as I gave you the green plants, I now give you everything.

Bad People Deserve to Die

It’s very convenient that a majority of the human
hors d’oeuvres in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom happen to be evil henchmen. It’s tempting to believe that the “bad guys” deserve to die so innocent dinosaurs can live, but that’s making an enormous faulty assumption – some people are actually good.

Even if we have compassion for animals, we’re all evil sinners. Remember that animals were sacrificed for sinful people in the Old Testament. Good thing Jesus came to provide the everlasting sacrifice so animal sacrifices could cease and man could have salvation.

Hebrews 10:11-14 (ESV)

And every priest stands daily at his service, offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins.  But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God,  waiting from that time until his enemies should be made a footstool for his feet.  For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.

You Are Worth Saving

We can see God’s tremendous love for humanity, He sent Jesus to die in our place of punishment. For a time between Adam and Jesus, the blood of animals was spilled to teach mankind the destructive force of sin.

Yes, animals should be treated humanely, but the Creator has spoken on the supreme value of human life. Jesus died and rose to save us.
