Wood the Manger Meet Our Expectations?

Christmas is right on our doorstep, which means we’ve had time to setup our nativity scenes and watch our favorite Christmas movies.  Hopefully, one of them is actually about Jesus.  If so, it probably has a scene were a baby is placed in a rickety wooden cradle full of straw.  These are such humble beginnings for the Christ to lodge His first night on Earth.  What if the iconic cradle wasn’t made out of wood?

The timber-framed manger and rickety wooden cradle were most likely a rocky cave and stone carved trough due to wood scarcity.  Much like my last post about the 3 WiseMen, the details aren’t essential since the Bible is all about the salvation provided by Jesus Christ; the main event.

It is intriguing to consider the whole scene you have in mind for the birth of Jesus, in reality, could have been totally different.  It would have been totally appropriate for the Living Water and Rock of our faith to rest in a stone water trough.

The Lord lives, and blessed be my rock, and exalted be my God, the rock of my salvation
