Is 3 a Magi Number?

It’s in a Christmas song, so it has to be true right?

“We three kings of Orient are,
Bearing gifts we traverse afar…”

I’m singing it and my neighbor’s nativity has 3 Wise Men so that settles it.  Or does it?

The Bible is silent on the matter.  What we know is 3 gifts were given and that’s why many assume there were 3 Wise Men.

Matthew 2:11 (NLT)

They entered the house and saw the child with his mother, Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasure chests and gave him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

Could be more, could be less.  We don’t know the exact number of Wise Men, but it doesn’t matter.  They’re just window dressing; the main even is Jesus.  The Savior had entered the world to redeem it!

Three applies to the Trinity, and a number of other things, but we’ll just have wonder as we wander about the exact number of kings that visited Jesus.

Maybe 3 doesn’t number the kings, but according to Schoolhouse Rock, magical qualities abide in the number 3…

  1. Hi brother the number 3 is used for the Trinity but it’s also used in the occult if I am correct about that and magic is part of the occult which God condemns magic agree?

    1. Most of the occult is a perversion of Biblical truth. God created and ordered the universe, which includes numbers – so I’m sure the occult locks onto specific numbers and dates for their wicked practices but it doesn’t make a number like 3 inherently evil.

  2. There are plenty of “threes” in the Bible and generally the number is used to signify completeness or wholeness.

You mentioned the trinity, also we are to love God with our 1)heart 2)soul and 3)mind.

Jesus is the 1)Way 2)Truth and the 3)Life.

1)Peter 2)James and 3)John were the three closest apstles.

Jesus rose from the grave on the third day just Jonah had been in the water three days.

    The angels in heaven constantly cry out 1)Holy 2)Holy 3)Holy is the 1)Lord 2)God 3)Almighty who 1)was 2)is and 3)will be. (3 sets of 3)

There are plenty others but I think that shows the picture.
