Hiding Behind Helmets

Auggie is a fifth-grader with facial differences.  His unique appearance is on center stage as his family makes the switch from homeschool to public school for Auggie.  Hoping to avoid attention, Auggie dons a space helmet but realizes he can’t hide forever.

With the help of his family and friends, Auggie realizes that life is tough for everyone.  Mom (Julia Roberts) doles out some stern love and convinces Auggie that appearance doesn’t define him!  His sister (Izabela Vidovic) also shares how tough the transition has been for her.  He might have noticed if he wasn’t so self-absorbed.

Wonder teaches us that we all wear helmets.  Most of the time it’s not as blatant as Auggie’s space helmet, but we hide behind titles, styles, and stay in the shadows simply because we are afraid of what people will think of us.  Our inward focus also keeps us from considering the struggles of those around us.

If you have a loving community like Auggie to tell you the tough truth you are blessed!

Proverbs 27:5-6 (NLT)

An open rebuke is better than hidden love!  Wounds from a sincere friend

are better than many kisses from an enemy.

The Bible tells us about the anointing of King David.  The prophet Samuel struggled to understand God’s grading criteria.  God, like Auggie’s mom, looks at His children with love and true discernment.

1 Samuel 16:7 (NIV)

But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”

May we remember we don’t need to hide from God.  He sees our hearts, wicked as they are, and offers forgiveness.  He knows that we are dust and prone to failure.  God’s love is astonishing.

Psalm 130:3-4

If you, Lord, kept a record of sins, Lord, who could stand?  But with you there is forgiveness, so that we can, with reverence, serve you.

  1. First time to your blog

Having good community who can be honest with us in good and bad times is so important! And you right, we don’t need to hide from God, kinda pointless really..Psalm 139:7-12.

    Thanks for sharing
