Kitty Restoration

Recently I wrote about the death of our orange kitten.  My five year old daughter took the loss in stride, shedding her tears but remaining thankful for the other animals in her care.  One of those remaining animals happened to be a pregnant cat and days after we lost our kitten, 5 new baby kittens entered the world.

It reminded me of Job.  In one day He suffered extreme loss; all his children died and all his animals were stolen.  The next day Job’s body was afflicted with sores.  Job was left with his withering body and a wife that encouraged him curse God and die.  It was a heavy loss, but Job was not abandoned by God.  After a period of suffering, the Lord restored Job and this is the component of the story that is frequently glossed over.

Job’s Inventory

Before the loss Job had the following:

  • 7 sons
  • 3 daughters
  • 7,000 sheep
  • 3,000 camels
  • 500 yoke of oxen
  • 500 donkeys
  • a large number of servants

In one day he lost EVERYTHING.

God’s Restoration

In Job 42 we learn that God blessed Job’s latter years with the same amount of children and double the amount of animals:

  • 7 sons
  • 3 daughters
  • 14,000 sheep
  • 6,000 camels
  • 1,000 yoke of oxen
  • 1,000 donkeys

I’m not trying to create a kitten theology here, I simply want to remember that God is good.  He allows suffering and loss, but He also restores.  God’s greatest promise is to restore us from death and give us eternal life in Christ.  I’m happy to see my daughter caring for 5 new kittens, but I have unspeakable joy that God’s greatest restoration will be raising my daughter from death to eternal life with Him.

Psalm 16:11 (NIV)

You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.
