What Does A Deer Know About Finding Jesus?

Life can get busy, our priorities can slowly shift and before we know it, life feels oppressive.  Maybe we’ve fallen back into sinful ruts or simply turned our backs on God.  The Bible shares how God’s people were in a similar situation.

Lamentations 1:5-6 (NIV)

Her foes have become her masters; her enemies are at ease.  The Lord has brought her grief because of her many sins.  Her children have gone into exile, captive before the foe.  All the splendor has departed from Daughter Zion.  Her princes are like deer that find no pasture; in weakness they have fled before the pursuer.

Without God, we are like deer without pasture – weak and malnourished.  What’s the solution?  How do we break out of this funk?

Thirst Drives Us Back To God

Psalm 42:1-2 (NIV)

As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God.  My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.  When can I go and meet with God?

Our spiritual dryness draws us back to the Lord.  Without water the human body can only survive 3-4 days.  Life drains out of the Christian when he or she foregoes drinking the Living Water.  Thankfully we have a Good Shepherd caring for us.

The Good Shepherd

Psalm 23:1-3 (NIV)

The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.  He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul.  He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake.

Jesus teaches this lesson to the Samaritan Woman at the well.  She was focused on getting water for the day, but Jesus used this occasion to teach a superior spiritual reality.

John 4:10-14 (NIV)

Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.”  “Sir,” the woman said, “you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water?  Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his livestock?”  Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”

Without Jesus, we will never be satisfied.  Nothing we consume will sustain us.  Drink deeply from the well of eternal life.
