Is King Kong Like Christ?

I wrote a review on the film Kong:Skull Island.  One theme piqued my curiosity, but in order to explore it I would spoil a surprise in the plot line. If you’re interested in my review or watching the film, hold your horses right here.  Spoilers are coming…

Kong is God on Skull Island

It’s revealed that King Kong is worshiped as god by the natives of Skull Island.  Kong protects the people from the underground lizard monsters (“Skull Crawlers”) and they worship Kong in return.  In fact, if Kong wasn’t around, the lizards would take over the whole island and destroy human life.

Where Christ & Kong Align

Protection is Found in God

God saves us from an enemy we have no power to defeat.  We’re as helpless as the islanders without Christ standing between us and the devil.  The islanders that tried to against the lizard monsters were consumed.  Any man that seeks to stand on his own righteousness is destroyed by the devil; we must turn to the Lord.

2 Thessalonians 3:3 (NIV)

But the Lord is faithful, and he will strengthen you and protect you from the evil one.

Psalm 12:5 (NIV)

“Because the poor are plundered and the needy groan, I will now arise,” says the Lord.  “I will protect them from those who malign them.”

Man Attacks God

Unaware of the monster economy on Skull Island, the exploratory team opens fire on King Kong in their first encounter.  This proves to be utterly useless.  The Bible mentions this foolish attitude among people in the world.

Isaiah 45:9 (NIV)

“Woe to those who quarrel with their Maker, those who are nothing but potsherds among the potsherds on the ground.  Does the clay say to the potter, ‘What are you making?’ Does your work say, ‘The potter has no hands’?

Kong Comes Up Short

Kong is Not a Creator

God is our creator; we’re made in His image.  King Kong is simply a part of God’s beautiful creation.

Genesis 1:27 (NIV)

So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.

Kong Offers No Relationship

Just let Kong do his thing – he kills the lizards and you stay out of his way.  Kong tolerates the islanders existence as long as they don’t bother him.  If you tick off Skull Island’s fickle Magilla Gorilla, he might just focus his rage on you.  Christ made a way for us to know God in relationship.  This is an extraordinary trait of our God.

Galatians 4:8-9 (NIV)

Formerly, when you did not know God, were slaves to those who by nature are not gods.  But now that you know God—or rather are known by God—how is it that you are turning back to those weak and miserable forces? Do you wish to be enslaved by them all over again?

Kong Never Gives His Life

Kong doesn’t die in anyone’s place but Christ stepped in and took our place of punishment to give us life.

1Peter 2:24 (NIV)

“He himself bore our sins” in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; “by his wounds you have been healed.”

Kong’s Protection: Not Perfect, Not Eternal

King Kong does what he can but his protection is faulty.  An occasional islander get’s snatched up under Kong’s watch.  Those in Christ do not have this fear.  Believers’ souls are totally secure for eternity, not just this lifetime.

John 10:28 (NIV)

I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand.

What Do You Think?

I would love to hear from you!  What would you add to the list?

    1. Thank you! When the line was delivered “Kong is God on this island” the wheels in my head started spinning – and there’s that bolt that always shoots out in a puff of steam. That happened in my head.
