How To Handle Slander

It’s tempting to seek validation from people, especially those of power and influence.  To reach their level of success they must know what they are talking about.  Right?  When you are hoping to hear an encouraging word, slander can be devastating, but the Psalmist offers a simple remedy.

Psalm 119:23-24 (NIV)

Though rulers sit together and slander me, your servant will meditate on your decrees.  Your statutes are my delight; they are my counselors.

Shift Your Focus

Tune Out The World

Don’t let the world and its leaders assign you an identity.  The Bible advises us to ignore the ungodly negativity of people around us.

Ecclesiastes 7:21 (NIV)

Do not pay attention to every word people say, or you may hear your servant cursing you…

Claim God’s Word Instead

Let God’s Word be your definition of truth.  In Scripture God clearly declares who we are through Christ.

  • Children of God (John 1:12)
  • God’s special possession (1 Peter 2:9)
  • Lavished in God’s love (1 John 3:1)
  • Hidden with Christ (Colossians 3:3)

The list goes on and on!  The Bible is brimming with good news for the believer.  May we take the advice of Psalm 119 and meditate on God’s decrees when slander lands on our ears.
